Will Google's Universal Cart Make Holiday Shopping Easier?

Post Summary

Google's new Universal Cart feature consolidates retail shopping across platforms, offering consumers centralized tracking, price notifications, and streamlined checkout options. While it simplifies holiday shopping for users, merchants face new attribution challenges that require monitoring through Google Merchant Center and store backends.

Google recently announced a new feature that may just change the way you shop online.  On October 15th, Google launched their Universal Cart feature. The Universal Cart creates a consolidated retail shopping experience by combining products from multiple retailers into one personal cart when you are shopping across Google. It even works across Google apps and platforms like Search, AI Mode & the Gemini App.

‍

In addition to putting all of your shopping items in one location, Google will also give you notifications about price changes or stock status for these items. Google indicates these will refresh throughout the day to give you the most up to date information.

‍

Once you are ready to checkout, Google will also give you additional information regarding how to save even more on your order. Examples given include available coupon codes, which credit card gives you the most cash back as well as order minimums for free delivery.

When you are ready to purchase, some merchants support checkout directly in the Universal Cart using Google Pay.  For others, you will have to transfer your items directly to the merchant’s cart and finish buying on their site.  Most likely, Google’s vision is for more merchants to adopt Universal Cart checkout in the future. If  your purchase is in the cart or with the merchant directly, they remain merchant of record.

‍

Where to Find Google's Universal Cart

So, where is Universal Cart found?  It’s located in your profile when you are logged into Google.  Click the circular image in the upper right hand corner of your profile to open your account menu.  From there, select “cart.”  Your cart will contain two different sections, “cart” and “my orders.”

Impact on Merchants: User Experience & Conversion Attribution

I was disappointed to see that my cart was empty, but I’d be curious if the notifications on price drops and stock status would create an urgency to checkout.  Perhaps we are heading towards a future where all purchases can be completed in the Universal Cart, however, adding things to the cart only to be redirected back to the Merchant’s website, seems like an unnecessary point of friction - though if Google sends the user directly back to the Merchant the order will utilize Google’s standard on-site conversion tags, resulting in standard attribution if you are utilizing Google Ads.

Attribution Challenges Across Platforms

The purchase flow will be a bit more nuanced if you are completing a purchase directly from Universal Cart. In this instance, Google will match the purchase ID and user credentials back to the ad interaction internally.

‍

Google Ads will take credit for the sale, but outside tools like Shopify or Google Analytics won't see the ad click. Without a custom backend connection to pull data from Google, those platforms will misclassify the purchase as direct traffic.

Tracking Universal Cart Data in Google Merchant Center

There isn’t currently any reporting on Universal Cart within Google Ads, as it is largely lumped together with your other conversion and cart data.  However, there is a Dedicated UCP/Cart Transfer funnel within Google Merchant Center that is starting to roll out to accounts.  Here, you can see Cart Additions, Cart Transfer Count and Native UCP Checkouts.  You can also review Universal Cart Data in your own store backend, under the channel source google_native_commerce or ucp_cart_transfer.

Final Thoughts: Preparing Your Store for the Holiday Season

As Google continues to expand its retail ecosystem, Universal Cart could significantly streamline the holiday shopping experience for consumers while presenting new attribution challenges and opportunities for merchants. Whether it becomes a primary checkout hub or simply a convenient central directory, keeping an eye on your Google Merchant Center data will be key to understanding its true impact on your store’s bottom line this holiday season.
