Why ZATO Is Doubling Down on Humans While Everyone Else Automates

Post Summary

Juking Left in an AI World: Why ZATO Is Doubling Down on Human Expertise

The PPC industry is having a moment right now.

You can see it everywhere: agencies experimenting with AI agents, exploring automation, trying to figure out how much of the account management workflow can be systematized.

Admittedly, some of it is definitely interesting, it is revolutionary and inspiring and innovative. There is no doubt that AI has changed the world, and in a lot of remarkable ways.

But also, lots of it is hype.

Some of it is hype that is costing you, while your agency uses their fees to figure out ways to work less on your dime. I talk with a lot of PPC people in my network, and the vast majority of AI agents and changes I see used don't demonstrate a positive performance impact (your benefit), but they demonstrate an efficiency impact (their benefit). Your paying agencies to figure out how to make more money, and the odds are that many aren't actually reinvesting that back into you.

But that's not all of us. At ZATO, we’ve been watching this closely (and experimenting, muchly!), and our response has been two-fold: to invest more deeply in human expertise rather than less, and to use AI to help supplement the human decisions. To help us make better decisions in your account, that will actually impact and improve performance.

Google Ads has gotten more technical, not less. Winning today requires real attention to backend data health: server-side conversion tracking, signal integrity, feed diagnostics, knowing when an algorithm is optimizing confidently toward the wrong thing. Clean conversion data isn’t a nice-to-have at this point, it’s the foundation everything else depends on. That kind of technical work benefits enormously from AI assistance in the analysis and monitoring layer, but it still requires experienced human judgment to interpret what the data actually means for a specific business and act on it appropriately.

That’s the context for what we’re announcing today.

‍

A New Role at ZATO: Data Analyst and Conversion Specialist

We are delighted to announce a third tier of support we are adding into our existing account team for every one of our ZATO clients (importantly, this does not include our Essentials clients who continue under the ultra-affordable, streamlined services tier for Small Budgets). With this position, we will have a dedicated analyst who is regularly digging into conversion tracking, curious performance changes, helping set up complex A/B testing, and more.

Even better, we didn’t have to look far to fill this position as we're transitioning one of our most senior ads team members, Diana Talhelm, into this dedicated role.

Diana has been with ZATO for six years and has been managing Google Ads for over a decade. She’s always been the person on our team who gravitates toward the technical weeds, and that’s exactly where this role lives. Going forward, she’ll be exclusively focused on deep-dive conversion audits, data monitoring, audience building, A/B test planning, and other supportive tasks for our account management team.

For existing clients, this doesn’t change your day-to-day experience and it doesn’t cost you anything extra. Your Senior-Level Account Manager remains your strategic lead, point of contact, and account button pusher. What changes is that they now have Diana as a dedicated second set of eyes on your backend data, especially when things go poorly.

‍

What ZATO’s Account Structure Looks Like Now

Every ZATO client is now supported by three distinct layers:

1) Your Senior-Level Experienced (no interns making decisions here!) Account Manager handles day-to-day execution and owns the proactive strategy for your account.

2) Our Strategic Heavyweights, Director of PPC Eric Marshall and myself (owner, Kirk Williams / @PPCKirk), are available as consulting support when accounts need a higher-level perspective.

3) Diana as Data Analyst & Conversion Code Specialist, focused entirely on conversion monitoring, data health, audits, and the technical infrastructure that makes everything else work correctly.

This structure reflects something we’ve come to believe pretty firmly: the campaign strategy layer and the technical data layer require different kinds of focused attention, and we're strengthening our ability to do both well by tasking a separate individual who will help on every ZATO account.

‍

Why This Matters Heading Into Q4

The accounts that perform well in Q4 tend to be the ones with clean data and solid infrastructure going in, not the ones catching tracking issues in October. Adding dedicated data expertise to every client relationship is our way of making sure that foundation is as solid as it can be before the most important stretch of the year.

We’re excited about where AI is taking this industry, and see a lot of positives... but we’re also committed to human expertise over the long run and are purposefully investing in human managements at ZATO. That combination is what we’re building toward, and Diana’s new role is the most concrete expression of it yet.

If you want to talk about what this looks like for your account specifically, we’re here.
